คำตาย (Dead Syllables)
What makes a syllable dead?

1) a short vowel (in open syllables without a final consonant)

กะ จะ ติ ดุ แกะ เตะ คะ นะ วะ แวะ

2) a stop final (- ก, – ด, – บ ending sounds)

In closed syllables with a stop final, we disregard the length of the vowels.

จาก ตาก มาก กัด ผัด สับ ตับ สิบ ดิบ

What makes a syllable live?

1) a long vowel (in open syllables without a final consonant)

กา จา ตา ดี ปี มี สี เจ ยา มือ ถือ เขา

2) a sonorant final (- ง, – น, – ม, – ว, – ย ending sounds)
In closed syllables with a sonorant final, we disregard the length of the vowels.

งง กิน จาน ผม แพง เรียน ขาว หิว สาย
